About the European Institute of Law

Independent Research. European Perspective. Global Relevance.

The European Institute of Law (EIL) is an independent research institute dedicated to advancing legal scholarship, policy research and informed public debate in Europe and beyond.

EIL examines how law evolves in response to the technological, economic, institutional and societal transformations shaping our time. We bring together researchers, academics, practitioners and policy experts to develop independent, rigorous and forward-looking perspectives on emerging legal and policy challenges.

At the heart of EIL is a commitment to connecting academic excellence with real-world relevance. Through research, publications, policy dialogue and international collaboration, the Institute seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of law and its role in shaping the future of European society.

Who We Are

Our Mission

EIL is conceived as an independent and internationally oriented research community for the study of law, institutions and public policy.

Our work is grounded in the European legal tradition while remaining inherently comparative and global in outlook. We recognise that many of today's most important legal questions, from artificial intelligence and data governance to digital sovereignty and fundamental rights, extend beyond national borders and traditional disciplinary boundaries.

EIL therefore provides a platform where different perspectives, jurisdictions and disciplines can meet, encouraging intellectual exchange between scholars and professionals working across Europe and internationally.

Independence, academic integrity and openness to diverse perspectives are central to our approach.

EIL's mission is to produce and promote independent, rigorous and policy-relevant legal research that contributes to understanding and addressing the challenges facing Europe and the wider international community.

We seek to:

  • Advance legal research on major contemporary and emerging issues.
  • Bridge research and policymaking by translating academic knowledge into meaningful policy dialogue.
  • Promote interdisciplinary thinking across law, technology, economics, governance and society.
  • Connect researchers and experts across institutions, disciplines and jurisdictions.
  • Support emerging scholarship by creating opportunities for researchers to develop and disseminate their work.
  • Contribute to public debate through accessible, evidence-based and independent analysis.

Our purpose is not simply to study how law is changing, but to better understand how law can respond to change while protecting fundamental values, rights and institutions.

Our Research

Understanding the Legal Challenges of Tomorrow.

EIL's research agenda reflects the changing nature of law in an increasingly interconnected and technology-driven world.

Our work encompasses established areas of European and international law while placing particular emphasis on emerging questions at the intersection of law, technology, governance and society.

European Law & Governance

Research on European institutions, regulatory development, integration and the evolving legal architecture of Europe.

Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies

Examining the legal and governance challenges created by artificial intelligence, automated decision-making and emerging digital technologies.

Data Law & Digital Governance

Research into data protection, data governance, digital regulation, platform governance and the changing relationship between individuals, institutions and technology.

Digital Sovereignty

Exploring how technological dependence, infrastructure, data and global digital markets are reshaping concepts of sovereignty, autonomy and regulatory power.

Fundamental Rights & Rule of Law

Examining the protection and evolution of fundamental rights, democratic institutions and the rule of law in periods of technological and societal transformation.

International & Comparative Law

Bringing comparative and international perspectives to legal developments that increasingly transcend national and regional boundaries.

EIL's research agenda is intentionally dynamic, allowing the Institute to respond to new legal questions and emerging policy challenges as they develop.

Academic Integrity
We value rigorous research, intellectual honesty and evidence-based analysis.

Openness
We encourage dialogue between different disciplines, jurisdictions, institutions and perspectives.

Relevance
We believe legal scholarship should contribute to understanding the challenges confronting institutions and societies today and in the future.
